Nice haul by Sean Ellis who I met at Face Records in Miyashita Park recently. Soundtracks, some Kayōkyoku, and the motherload of Video Game Records! Face was hoarding a treasure trove of them apparently, waiting to be discovered by Sean. It was my first time meeting Sean, though it turns out we have heaps of mutual friends.
After comparing notes, I was quick to recognize that our shared contacts are friends who tend to be deep into at least two but usually more of the following subcultures: Comics, Anime, Tokusatsu, Kaiju, Soft Vinyl Toys, Thrash Metal, Idol bands, Noise Music, Rush, Video Games, Clowning, Animal Balloons, Rush, Photography, Poetry, Typeface design, Pro Wrestling, Superhero genre, Science fiction, Cosplay, Latex, and University Research. I think that about covers them all. My hunch is that Sean is into them all, and that’s based on a few things he mentioned in passing: that he regularly attends pro-wrestling matches, that he DJ’s ALL Video Game Music Sets, and that he created his own comic: “DOSE!” that according to Google is themed around “Meta-Drugs, Kaiju Sex & Ultra Violence – a unique reinterpretation of the superhero genre which explores what would happen to society if the technology and superhero population introduced in the Silver Age of Comics grew exponentially through today.” Actually looks AMAZING, and now I’m keen to get an issue. God, I love meeting the people in my city that make Tokyo such a crazy cool place. Thanks for the time Sean, and for sharing all this about yourself. Hope I can read a copy of DOSE! at some point, hears one of these video game sets, and be your fellow pro-wrestling spectator! Not sure how well I will fare in any of those worlds, but always keen to expand my horizons! As written in S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders, which I kindly think Sean is, an outsider that is, until next time, “Stay Golden Ponyboy!”
