Aaron Hamby

While visiting family back in my hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA, Tokyo Record Style will only temporarily be recognized as “Tulsa Record Style” 🙂

Exploring the Tulsa Record stores has been interesting and enlightening. Busy with family activities, I haven’t had time to visit them all but I did manage to spend half a day running around to various locations. At Josey Records, on Historic Route 66, I spotted Aaron having just wrapped up a dig in a giant pile of 45s that I was coming upon. “They’re all yours,” he said with a friendly smile, having no doubt painstakingly filtered through dust, debris, and tattered sleeves to uncover the small stack of could-be gems he held in his hands. His ratty chucks, cool tattoos, faded Mortal Kombat t-shirt, along with a slacker strut and an every-so-ornery smile made me very interested to follow him outside after he checked out, to chat him up and hopefully make his photo.

Aaron and I hit it off immediately and rapped for a good 30 minutes about Tulsa, about Tokyo, about music, records, art, and more. We had a bunch of good laughs and smiles, and it turns out we know a handful of the same people and our circles actually overlap in a number of places. We also witnessed a gang of about 100 motorcycles coming down the road throttling wheelies and hooting and hollering while we chatted which was quite a site Aaron is an artist and musician and having bartended a tour of duty at the legendary Tulsa institution, Sound Pony, he no doubt has his finger on the pulse of what going down all around.

With scores like Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue”, Roberta Flack’s “Killing Me Softly”, some Everly Brothers and more, it’s not only clear Aaron stumbled into some treasure at Josey’s Records, but that he has some great and eclectic taste in music. Glad to be connected, Aaron! Thanks for posing for the camera. Looking forward to staying in touch.
