A Tokyo Record Style First!
Traversing central Tokyo with just a bit more of Sunday morning to kill, and with a Disk Union that I rarely visit right on my route, how could I not at least pop by and see if anybody was walking around the adjacent plaza with recently purchased records? So I took the right Yushima Seido, the black 17th century Confucian Temple, crossed Kanda River, spotted the green copper roof of the Holy Resurrection Cathedral, and there coming down the stairs of the 2nd floor Disk Union was Yamazaki san carrying a 12×12” vinyl record store bag.
I parked my bike on the sidewalk, and quickly stopped Yamazaki san to ask him if he had indeed just scored some records and, though I seemed to have caught him completely off guard and slightly bewildered, he confirmed that he had and also agreed to be photographed for Tokyo Record Style. Proceeding to ask him what records he scored, I couldn’t believe what happened next. From his bag, he pulled out a copy of Yukihiro Takahashi’s, “Murdered By The Music”, the EXACT record that I had bought just mere 10 minutes before! Whoa! What are the odds? Talk about synchronicity! After a short jubilant moment, again I was commiserating with another fan about the passing of an artist we both admired deeply.
Yamazaki san had also picked up Takahashi’s 3rd album, “Neuromantic” (a word I really dig), and posed for a few photos before heading back to Saitama where he mentioned he lived. Thanks, Yamazaki san for that serendipitous meeting. More Tokyo Record Style to come…
