Another top-notch live album from Sam Cooke
Recorded in July 1964, ‘At the Copa’ is a great live album from Sam Cooke and an excellent companion piece to ‘At the Harlem Square Club’ from January 1963. Both recordings capture the singer at the height of his powers and with first-rate backing bands. They prove, beyond any doubt, that Sam Cooke was a great singer and a first-class entertainer. ‘At the Harlem Square Club’ is a grittier, more down-to-earth album, whereas ‘At the Copa’ is smoother and more sophisticated. Which one do I prefer? Well, if I were forced to choose, I’d take the recording from 1963, as the energy level is simply amazing. The singer obviously chose the material and altered his performances to suit the two audiences. So, if you’re looking for a live Sam Cooke album and can’t decide between the two recordings, please allow me to offer you a word of advice. Get them both. You certainly won’t be disappointed.
