Kerry and Yuki

Meet lovely Kerry and (and Yuki) whom I caught up with on the streets of Shibuya for a friendly chat and some Tokyo Record Style. As is always the case, they were a little suspicious at first, just as I would be on the chaotic streets of Shibuya, but a genuine shared interest in music broke the ice and we got a off to smashing start. Kerry had just scored some records from Tower Records down the road.

(Side note: In case you don’t know, a few months back Tower moved its giant ~7th-floor vinyl section in Shinjuku all over to Shibuya. The Shinjuku space was properly cool, but I don’t lament the move, as I can more easily pop by Shibuya on my way home from work. It’s significantly more crowded than Shinjuku ever was, but there is something about that I actually like; seeing a record store brimming with people restores my faith in humanity.)

Kerry and Yuki told me it was date night (summer love is in the air!) and what a date to have with a visit to the record shop! They told me they also stopped at a special “Purikura” (print-club), the beloved mini photo booths where you can snap a couple of shots, bling ‘em out kitsch style, and make a memory! So it was a night of music AND photos! My kinda night! As Kerry and Yuki told me more about themselves, about having lived in Hawaii, about being sauna aficionados (a new favorite pastime that’s getting super popular), I was picking up some details, Kerry’s cute Tiffany necklace and Yuki’s dapper sneakers (turns out they were gifts for the other!) Ah, there it is again! Carefree-gift-filled-date-life-youth – Love it!

So what did Kerry score? Well, Tatsuro Yamashita’s seminal “For You”, featured for the 3rd time on TRS! Huge re-release! The other record was Canadian Rapper and R&B Soulster, Daniel Caesar’s new release, which is truly a masterpiece from beginning to end. Born the same year that I graduated highschool, he has not been on my radar yet, but I’m so glad he is now. This is going in heavy rotation.

Im so glad we’re all in a post-“How-do-you-not-know-so-and-so?!?!” Makes it all so much easier, fun, and relaxed. Cuz you just can’t know it all. But with this nice tip from Kerry, I’m getting closer 😉

More TRS on the way!
