Keiichiro Fukuzumi, Akitake Yamato, and Kosuke Awane

I had 20 minutes to kill last weekend while waiting for my son’s backflip class (yes, backflip class) to end and spotted a record store on the map just a stone-throw away, one I had never been to before, called “OM Physical Store” (OM for Organic Music). DEEP in the backstreets of Shimoigusa, far off the beaten path, I did NOT expect to find such an extremely hip store, just recently opened last September by author of the holy grail guide, “Obscure Sound”, Mr. Chee Shimizu, known for compiling the comprehensive discography of some of the best rare records from around the world, and DJ’ing with said sounds. Don’t worry if you don’t know Chee by name, I didn’t either, and got a friendly earful from these gents for not knowing, but when I introduced myself to Chee after admiring this crazy cool record store for the short time I had, he was super kind, his a big warm charismatic smile came over me. His warmth compelled me to want to return immediately to spend more time there. I’ve been thinking about it all week!

I had so very little time to chat up the fellas photographed here, but meet Akitake Yamato, Keiichiro Fukuzumi, and Kosuke Awane, all three DJs and from the looks of it, and judging by the intriguing Contemporary Polish Jazz records that Fukuzumi-san scored, as well as seeing in their feeds them all DJing at experimental looking spaces (Uptown Records in Koenji among them, another record store I have yet to visit, but apparently known for some quite rare underground gems), these guys and their musical interests are really piquing my curiosity. Lucky for all of us, they’re regularly hosting DJ events, next up being:

・February 12th @ Uptown Records Koenji
・February 26th @ Bar Stereo Takadanobaba

Hope to visit OM Physical Store very soon again (like today!) and meet these guys again! More Tokyo Record Style on the way!
