With a smile like this, how could I not stop Iggy and chat him up?
Outside of Ella Records on the streets of Hatagaya, the bright blue Los Angeles Dodgers cap and t-shirt (“Freeman #5” on the back) grabbed my attention. Being just a very short stone-throw away from the famed “Freeman Shokudo”, famously delicious Jewish/Japanese BBQ Soulfood, run by the ever-affable Jeffrey Freeman (also past Tokyo Record Style subject and proprietor of Deadly Dragon Records) my mind actually went there first. Could Iggy and his crew be mega Smokehouse fans? (Note to Aaron: I’d probably buy a Freeman Shokudo baseball jersey if one ever existed.)
Continuing on tangents, though I haven’t kept up with it in years, Baseball is in my blood. I grew up playing, spent endless hours at the ballpark, and even traveled around America one summer jumping from stadium to stadium, hitting about 12 of them across the West. I can watch it or listen to it all day, and, like music, I just never seem to tire of it. Baseball is a perfect afternoon (Thinks to self: “Is a great baseball game like a great musical album?”) There was a time in my life when knew all the players of all the teams, and the rankings of all the leagues and divisions, had posters on my walls, and much like my records, too many baseball cards in my collection to keep track of. And just coincidentally, I’ve been thinking a lot about baseball cards lately, card conventions and swap meets, trading cards in the park with your buds, and the nature of collecting and looking for some correlation to records, which has really got my gears spinning. Hmm… anyway…
Back to Iggy! The Freeman on his Dodgers T-shirt was 7-time All-star, League MVP, and World Series Champ, Freddie Freeman, and the record in Iggy’s hand was his FIRST! – becoming a rather common occurrence on Tokyo Record Style! Iggy was not alone, in fact, he was with 5 family members, siblings, cousins, and relatives all traveling to Tokyo together from L.A. and taking back this record from Ella as a memento! The whole crew was as friendly as their smiles were big. Had a great chat and sent them on their way! Hope you guys had fun!
More Tokyo Record Style on the way!
