Believe it or not, DJ Haruto pictured here is 13 years old. He was hanging out with DJ Keesh when I met them in front of Disk Union in Shinjuku. Despite being just 13 years old and never having lived overseas, Haruto was speaking English with me. When I asked him how he learned English, he answered with cool confidence, “I’m just trying” …man, that alone made quite an impression on me. But Haruto would end up making an even bigger impression on me when he told me that he is a scratch DJ and that he has been scratch DJing since he was 8-years-old ….WHHHAAAATTTT!?!?!
Keesh had gifted him a Souls Of Mischief copy of “93 ‘Til Infinity” so I dragged Haruto across the street to be the first one of the lot to photograph with a record. Haruto commented on my camera (which by the way is a Canon R5 for all these shots, either with a 24-70mm/2.8EF or a 50 mm/1.2EF) saying he wanted a mirrorless Sony. That would be wicked, Haruto. I have a feeling it would be in good hands with you.
After a few photos, we walked back across the street to where we started, and there standing next to Tama and Keesh, was a 15-year-old spitting image of Haruto, his older brother, Keito, who Keesh would mention is, get this, the reigning IDA (International DJ Association) World Champion Scratch DJ. Keesh has known the boys since they were even younger, remembering them being just tykes at a Beat Junkies event.
Keito was just as friendly and smiley as Haruto and I will have to add him to Tokyo Record Style individually down the line. I did check out both brothers’ Instagrams and it all tracks, no pun intended. These brothers, when both at the decks, are like a 2-headed Scratch DJ Monster! You GOTTA see this.
