Spotted Guilherm on the streets of Shibuya carrying a Disk Union bag and rawking a pretty interesting sweater. I chatted him up about TRS and in no time he warmed up to the idea of being added to the archive. His ever-so-unfamiliar accent left me guessing where he was from and as soon as I asked, he offered that he was visiting from Brazil, I lit up with excitement!
“DOOD! I LOVE Brazillian music! I’m dying to go to Brazil! My old posse are samba drummers! And I love Brazilian Rock, Psychedelia, MPB, Tropicalismo, Bossa! Jobim, Astrud, Gilberto, Nascimento, Caetano, Rita, Os Mutantes, Gal, Raul Seixas, Secos e Molhados…”
Guilherm was taken aback slightly by my enthusiasm.
“Don’t you know ‘Secos e Molhados’?”
“Oh, you mean Secos e Molhados he said in that language most pleasing to my ears, correcting my butchered Portuguese. “No, not really” he replied, “only by name.”
“MAN!” I said, “You gotta check them out, they are feakin’ amazing! Hey, I’m always trying to get great Brazillian music recommendations, if you have any, please unload some on me.”
“Well, if you love samba, the artist that I’d recommend is Cartola, a Brazillian Sambista”
“JACKPOT!!” (I’ve been listening non-stop since – absolutely killer) “So what did you score today?!?!”
From Guilherm’s Disk Union bag, he produced one record, Marvin Gaye – What’s Going On.
“NOICE SCORE,” I exclaim!
“Yeah, I got it here cuz records are cheaper here in Japan than they are in Brazil…”
“And guess what… It’s my FIRST record!”
“WHAAAAHHHHAAAA!!!! Are you kidding? YES!!! WOOOHOOO!!!!! HIGH FIVE!!!”
Sheesh… We chatted some more and did these great photos, but Guilherm had to dash off (to get to another record shop before it closed.) What a great encounter. I sure wish I could do this all day, every day. People, photos, music, this city, these streets…
More TRS on the way…
