Description
Limited 180 gram audiophile vinyl LP pressing including insert. Housed in a PVC sleeve. While Kraftwerk was emerging in Europe and became an influence and inspiration to the Japanese superstars, YMO stayed true to their unique sound. YMO’s second album Solid State Survivor was released in 1979 and represented numerous crossover tracks from techno to new wave. Solid State Survivor is probably the most sampled YMO album, as over the years several artists performed numerous covers of ‘Behind The Mask’. This extremely popular album peaked at #1 in several charts all over the world.

YMO。

From the golden age of analog synthesis — don’t miss it
Many of the cuts on this CD were originally released on a vinyl record called “X Multiplies”, with replicated mannequins of Sakamoto, Hosono, and Takahashi on the cover, staring at the camera. It was one of the coolest covers ever! It kinda makes you miss the days when cover art was, to a large extent, what sold music. Solid State Survivor was released later. There is no question in my mind that the loss of the phonograph record, with it’s lush graphic format and large size, forever diminished the meaning and importance of recorded music. There are many wonderful cuts on this essential YMO CD, among them “Behind The Mask”, with it’s incredibly tight vocoder vocal and percussion section, and a beautifully symmetrical harmonic structure that I have always found irresistible. It’s one of my three favorite songs of all time — I am a pro musician myself with a very broad musical perspective, and I’m telling you, I never tire of “Behind The Mask”. I was surprised to hear that other artists, including Michael Jackson, had covered “Behind The Mask”. I had no idea that Behind the Mask was the hit on the album — I thought it was an obsession that i alone had. Not true. Technopoly is pretty cool too. Nearly all the tracks are excellent, but Behind The Mask remains a classic for all time.I recently saw YMO’s return concert at the Hollywood Bowl (“big in Japan” June 2011) — they hadn’t played LA since 1979, and I was thrilled to see them up there on the stage. Takahashi was an outstanding drummer after all these years. Computer Game was first and Behind the Mask was second on the program, which delighted me no end. Yoko Ono made a surprise appearance at the end of the program and the closing cut was none other than “Hello Goodbye” from the Beatles.I can’t strongly enough recommend YMO’s other albums, as well, especially BGM and Technodelic was also groundbreaking. It’s techno rock and it doesn’t get any cleaner or tighter than this.
