They say Shibuya Scramble is the busiest intersection in the world. Is it true? Could be. Two things are for sure. 1.) It still manages to impress, no matter how many hundreds (or thousands) of times you’ve crossed it, and 2.) It’s where I spotted Temuge crossing in the sea of people with his pal, both with ice-pops on a Saturday Night.
I chatted Temuge there on the corner in a mix of Japanese and English and I began to wonder if Japanese was both our second languages. I asked Temugu where he was from and I thought I heard him say “Hangug” which is how to say “Korean” in Korean. The Japanese have another word for Korean (Kankoku) but they also use the word “Hanguru” but I’ve never heard a Korean introduce themselves as Hangug or similar. But after a follow-up chat, it all made more sense, because Temuge wasn’t from Korea at all, he didn’t say “Hanguru”, her said “Mongoru” – Temuge is from Mongolia (and Japan)! I misheard him, but what a delightful miss. Dang, Mongolia is on the top of my places to visit. I asked Temuge to recommend some Mongolian artists and he share these: Hip-Hop artist, “Sash”, Pop artist, “290”, Mongolian folk metal band: “The Hu”, and Alt-punk-rockers: “Nisvanis”. I checked ‘em all out – interesting deep dive. I really enjoyed 290 for some interesting soundscapes backing some pretty and simple songs!
But Temuge didn’t score any Mongolian records on this run to Tower Vinyl. He picked up a copy of Tyler, the Creator’s highly-acclaimed Igor, as a present for his girlfriend, Margad, who loves the song “New Magic Wand”. Temuge is just 15-years old, but I could tell just crazy in love he is with his girlfriend. He told me that if one day they get married, his dream is to own a super hi-fi set-up and listen to lots of records with her every day. Sounds like a GREAT plan, Temugu! You’re off to a great start, pal. Good luck and enjoy that record and that girl!
