Heya friends! Top 5 records is looking for a new home. We actually have a couple of candidate venues and are looking to start back up in the new year, maybe with a slightly new format. Top 5 Records – Tokyo Record Style

Welcome to “Top 5 Records” where music-loving pals and DJs Michael Warren, “bemsha” (Tatsuo Fukutomi), and “Zebrio” (Brian Scott Peterson, i.e. yours truly), invite their friends to an afternoon and evening of playing records and counting down their Top 5 Records on various themes!Our Top 5 Record events are hosted every month (or so) at “てっちゃんやきとり Talking Gorilla” in Shimokitazawa Station, and consist of a full afternoon of music played by 4 DJs (usually the three of us and one guest DJ)! We also have a “Talk/Slide Show” where DJs take turns counting down their “Top 5” Records, albums, songs, or artists, on various predetermined themes. It’s up to each DJ to interpret the theme as they see fit and share their music passions and appreciation for all! Please join us! Hi everybody, I’m Brian!

What I’ve been discovering through Tokyo Record Style is that I’m not listening to what the corporate radio stations are trying to sell me, nor am I listening to a playlist curated by a single individual, or worse yet, a bot. By approaching record-collecting strangers on the streets of Tokyo, who collectively have an absolutely enormous spectrum of taste, I realize that I AM listening to an algorithm …the HUMAN ALGORITHM, and I am 10,000% convinced, it is the best way to discover new music.
