Doc Martin

“Music is a celebration of life.”

I had the great privilege to tap into dance party culture in the late 90s and early 00s via Unity Gain (if you know, you know.) It was through IVY, Psychonaut, and Liondub that I got hip to techno, house, dub and dancehall, and there was a chapter where concerts and live gigs gave way to raves and house parties, a trend I brought with me to Tokyo back when we’d dance till noon at Yellow, Womb, Ageha, Air, and Unit. Though I didn’t go miles deep into all the names and players on every mix, remix, or behind every pair of decks, I did get to see the likes of DJ Krush, DJ Shadow, Richie Hawtin, Jeff Mills, Underworld, Fatboy Slim, Chemical Brothers, Daft Punk, all back in the day! I sometimes still see Maro, Koco, Jay Zimmerman and many other DJs, Turtablists, and producers I’ve come to know through the Tokyo Record Style project.

But it’s not often you meet DJ royalty like I did on this one particular night last summer. “Excuse me, did you score some records? Wanna chat me up? I’m Brian! What’s your name?” “Hi Brian, it’s Doc, Doc Martin.” “THE Doc Martin?” “The one and only?” “WOW!”

Doc Martin not only IS the forefront of dance music, he’s got to be the most passport-stamped ambassador of the House Nation! He was SUPREMELY cool and kind and generous with his time and attention (his Lovely Lovely too! Hi Sylvia!) SO much energy and charisma, it’s no wonder he has remained a world-wild celebrator of music for 3+ decades, having played some of the most legendary stages, parties, and festivals of all time, known for keeping the dance floor shaking their booties for EXTENDED periods of time. I think Doc told me this was his 20-something’th trip to Japan, he’s been playing here since the 90s. WOW! I think he’s keeping the party going, raising the vibe in Ibiza right NOW as I type this.

After a 20 minute hangout on the streets of Shibuya after Doc had picked up some rare grooves for the next sets, he left me with a HUGE smile on my face and bragging rights to my dance party friends here and back home! Thanks Doc Martin, You’re legend!
