There is a certain quality that some people have, I guess you’d call it literally character, that if you have aspirations of ever writing a novel, you, when meeting these specimens, think to yourself, “Oh, here’s a good one to make a memo of. This guy’s whole being is expressive, I’m gonna base a character on this guy, in fact, I’m gonna cook up a little fictional vignette based on this very meeting, I mean after all, you can’t make up somebody or situations better than this.”
David from The Little Record Store in North London was and is one such character, who I encountered at the register at HMV Kichijoji who had racked up an impressive 6 figure Japanese Yen bill on the cash registers, which you don’t see every day. I noticed the little display on the cash register before I noticed David, and shouted out a reactive and audible “WHOA! NICE JOB!” then peeked over the counter to see a couple dozen price tags all getting tallied up! I turned to my left and there with a big (and all-too-familiarly ornery) smile was David. “Well done, mate!” I congratulated him. “I’m David, I own a record store in London, Little Record Shop. Yeah, I’m admittedly on a little shopping spree for the shop.” “Dang, David! I know Little Records! Nice to meet you I’m Brian, I do Tokyo Record Style!” “Oh shit, I know Tokyo Record Style!”
And so it went on…
We followed the good light outside onto the street where we kept talking music and where David presented his massive haul, ALL GEMS that will go on to make happy some very lucky local record collectors in London because Little Record Shop only sells in the shop, so you’re guaranteed not to have to compete with online vultures.
