“Cristina! What the hell are you doing here?”
“Just picking up Björk’s Homogenic on wax.”
“Wait… you’re just picking up Björk’s Homogenic ..at Tower …for yourself?”
“Yeah, you gotta problem with that?”
“No, but why?”
“Cuz it’s a great fucking album. One of my favorites.”
“No, I mean why have we known and worked with each other for years and years and this is the first time I’m hearing of you collecting records?”
“Cuz there’s a lotta shit you don’t know about me, Brian. Now can I go enjoy my record?”
“Yes, Yes! …by all means! Go enjoy!”
Well, it didn’t exactly go down like that, but that’s the way I remember it when I randomly met an old and dear colleague, Cristina Marie Deane (…by the way, congrats on getting hitched and may I ask, is it still Deane?) …with her pals on the streets of Tokyo. First time I met Cristina, she was actually a student, paving her own way across the world, far from her old home town in San Diego. She was pining for an intern position, and though I couldn’t put too fine a point on it (and I hope she won’t mind me saying this,) I saw a lot of myself in her. Super different in every way to be sure, but resourceful, ornery, and determined, and a bit shameless in that she was just relying on her own wits, which I sensed there were plenty of. In no time, she proved herself invaluable, so invaluable that her internship turned into a full-time position and we had, what I would say were, many good years of working together, eventually getting to that space where you become a well-oiled machine and can anticipate the others’ needs. Great teammate and lovely pal.
I’ll embarrass her just a bit. Of all the countless times I’ve been to Karaoke over the years, nobody has ever stopped the show like I’ve Cristina do so. Aside from being a pro cohort, a good pal, she’s an incredible singer, and I’m not talking like no Stevie Nicks, Joni Mitchell, or Linda Ronstadt. Rather even MORE sublime, like Billie Holiday, Patsy Cline, or Astrud Gilberto. Reeeal pretty voice, bonafide super power, yes indeed. Come to think of it, maybe I should ask her to do a Björk tune if we ever find ourselves at a Karaoke party again.
