Asada

Asada and I were rushing past each other in opposite directions somewhere in the middle of Shibuya Station’s massive redevelopment project when I spotted him with an Ultra Shibuya Record Store Bag. I “Oh Oh Oh’d” him and proceeded to give him the pitch and asked hat he thought about sharing a couple of minutes with me and talking about the records that he scored. As I recall his girlfriend wasn’t all too pleased about the proposition, and I wondered as I took his photo, if he was more concerned about disappointing me or her.

Asada didn’t “give” me much in terms of fodder to chew on but hey, that’s ok, I just appreciated him sharing his time and records, two 12” singles that neither of us seemed to know anything about. I later went home to discover British pop singer, Yazz and The Plastic Population, who had this very dance hit from 1988 reminding me something of the cross between Salt-N-Pepa and Bozy II Men, and Sade. The other 12” was some (what I’m gonna call) “Old-ish School Japanese Hip Hop” from 1999, something of a cross between Wu Tang and DMX. Two fun records that enjoyed filing away in my memory. Wonder what the artists are up to now. I wonder what Asada san is up to now. Does he still have those records? I wonder if he listened to them as many times as I did 🙂

Thanks Asada san for sharing your records and time with me and sorry if your girlfriend wasn’t all too pleased. Hope I didn’t get you in trouble and even though nearly a year has passed since we crossed paths, hope you’re still with her and surviving the summer.

More Tokyo Record Style on the way!
