The world gets smaller through music.
The first contact I made with friendly, photographer / skateboarder / developer / record-store owner, Antti from Finland was in May of last year. He wrote to me saying he found me out on the intertubes somewhere, here or there, and that he had just returned home to Jyväskylä after a trip to Japan, so invigorated by his stay, that he was already planning his next trip. We kept an exchange going and about half a year later in December, I got a message from Antti with an update that he was in Sydney and, within a few days, that would be in Tokyo and was keen to rendezvous, which we eventually did.
Now I’m not totally sure about this, and we really didn’t discuss it at all, but I’m a Peterson, and my great grandfather Axle was the first of our clan to board a ship from Sweden bound for America. Sadly, I’ve yet to really explore my Scandinavian roots, but I have to say, often when I encounter hemispherians of the far north, I can’t help but see and feel myself in them. And I definitely felt that way upon meeting Antti face to face (Thinks to self: “Ah, common viking ancestor!” followed always by the thought that my DNA is just a few clicks away from circling around the globe, getting back to where it started.
Antti was insanely cool and nice and told me about his shop, Polokka Beat and how the shop’s logo cleverly riffs on Jyväskylä’s coat of arms. I really dug it and lucky for me, Antti scored me some stickers and a t-shirt. We had a great time hangout out, scored some nice records, and have kept the connection going since, and I suspect that’ll continue for a long time to come.
Thanks for the connection (and all the swag), Antti! Let’s figure all we talked about out and forge the Finland/Japan bond even stronger! Looking forward to stying in touch!
